Sodium valproate induced cataract: A case report

Abstract :
<p> <span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA">Valproic acid (VPA) is used for the treatment of epileptic seizures. Here we report, a case of cataract following sodium valproate administration for treatment of epileptic seizures. She was diagnosed as a patient of bilateral</span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA"> subcapsular cataract. </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA">She was on sodium valproate therapy for treatment of epileptic seizures for past 6 years. According to the Naranjo’s scale, the effect of sodium valproate in our patient was scored 6 indicating a probable likelihood of causing cataract. It was a probable cause of cataract according to World Health Organization (WHO) causality scale. </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:16.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language: AR-SA">She underwent surgical treatment for cataract</span></p>
